Luc Julia, world-renowned expert in Artificial Intelligence, joins Groupe Renault

Boulogne-Billancourt, April 22, 2021 – Groupe Renault announces the appointment of Luc Julia, a worldwide expert in artificial intelligence and co-creator of the Siri technology, as Group Chief Scientific Officer.

Luc Julia will be responsible for supporting the functions and brands in the conception and deployment of the Group's roadmap for innovation and key technologies to meet the challenges of tomorrow's mobility. In this capacity, he will act as an expert in fields as diverse as artificial intelligence, man-machine interfaces, connectivity and software. He will oversee the research and development of these technologies and innovations for their integration into the Group's product and service plan. He will also interface with key players and partners in the sector, notably in the framework of the Software République. In order to accelerate the company's shift towards a value chain more focused on next generation services and products, Luc Julia will also be responsible for instilling the Tech culture within the functions and brands.  

Luc Julia is a French-American engineer and computer scientist, born in Toulouse and specialised in artificial intelligence. After obtaining a BS and MS in mathematics and computer science from the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris), he obtained a PhD in computer science from the École Nationale Supérieure des télécommunications in Paris.  
He began his career in 1994 at SRI International, where he created the "Computer Human Interaction Center". He participated in the launch of Nuance Communications, today the world leader in speech recognition, and co-founded several start-ups in Silicon Valley.  
In 1997, with a friend, he filed the patents for what would later become Siri and in 1999 presented "The Assistant", the ancestor of the voice assistant.  
In 2010, he became Chief Technologist at Hewlett-Packard, then joined Apple in 2011 to lead the development teams of Siri (voice command computer application). He is recognised as the co-creator of Siri.  
In 2012, he was appointed Senior Vice President and CTO of Samsung Electronics.  
In 2019, he published his book "Artificial intelligence does not exist" with First Editions.  
Since 2020 Luc Julia is a member of the French Academy of Technologies. On October 2020, he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur (the highest French order of merit) by the Secretary of State for the Digital Economy, in recognition of his work that has influenced the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Digital Media and other advanced technologies.
